Course description

This course is intended for beginner users, who have preliminary computer and MS Windows knowledge and skills, but have not used Microsoft Access or any relational database management software before, or have minimal experience on this area. The course provides participants with the necessary knowledge to use MS Access 2010/2013 in daily office work at a basic level, focusing on relational databases and database design concepts, managing data, and using simple queries. The course is also a prerequisite for the advanced level.


Skills in using computers and MS Windows environment (Windows desktop, managing files and folders, running programs). Prior knowledge of any relational database program, or of  Ms Excel is useful.

Course outline

  • Overview of relational database concepts and essentials: relationships between data, databases; 
  • Concepts of tables, records, indexes, fields, and keys; 
  • Basic database design concepts; 
  • Planning databases; 
  • Meaning of normalizing data; 
  • Getting started with access: starting the program, using the access environments (menus, tools), using views, using the access help, managing access files (open, close, save, save as, convert); 
  • Understanding tables and indexes concepts: creating tables, examining a table, fields and records and their properties; 
  • Creating a table with the table wizard, creating a table in design view, using types of keys, using indexes; 
  • Working with tables: adding records; 
  • Modifying the table design; 
  • Finding and editing records; 
  • Deleting, adding, and copying records and values; 
  • Filtering and sorting records; 
  • Fundamentals of creating and managing multiple tables; 
  • Creating relations between tables: types of relationships; 
  • Relationship properties; 
  • Understanding referential integrity; 
  • Query essentials: concepts of queries; 
  • Overview of types of queries (action, crosstab, parameter); selecting fields and sorting records; 
  • Using query wizard; 
  • Adding criteria for query; 
  • Using calculation operators in queries; 
  • Using of basic functions; 
  • Printing tables; overview of forms and reports; 
  • Reviews and practices.
